In a significant breakthrough, Tripura Police have arrested Congress leader Md Sahajan Islam from the Jaypur area on the outskirts of Agartala after he had been absconding for several months. The arrest is linked to two criminal cases involving alleged derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha and an alleged case of signature forgery.
Addressing the media, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Debprasad Roy said the first incident dates back to June 8, 2025, when Md Sahajan Islam allegedly made indecent and objectionable comments against the Chief Minister at Shantipara in Agartala. The remarks later went viral on social media, triggering widespread public outrage. While his father and brother were arrested soon after the incident, Sahajan Islam reportedly went into hiding to evade police action.
During the period he remained absconding, Sahajan Islam filed a bail application in the District Court. However, investigators later found that the signature on the petition was allegedly forged, leading to the registration of an additional case. Police subsequently registered two separate cases—Case No. 61/2025 and Case No. 99/2025—against him.
Based on a confidential tip-off, police tracked and arrested him from Jaypur on Tuesday. SDPO Roy confirmed that interrogation is underway as investigations continue to uncover further details related to the cases.
