Agartala, August 3: Marking another milestone in Tripura’s rural development journey, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed Betchara Rural Market under the Kumarghat subdivision of Unakoti district. Built at a cost of ₹2.20 crore, the market is expected to strengthen agricultural marketing, improve farmers’ access to buyers and stimulate economic activity in the region.

Inaugurating the facility, the minister said the new rural market would provide a modern and organized platform where farmers, traders and consumers could engage in fair and transparent trade. He expressed confidence that the market would help cultivators secure better prices for their produce while reducing their dependence on middlemen.

Addressing the gathering, Nath said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to modernizing agricultural infrastructure and improving the livelihoods of farming communities. He noted that strengthening rural markets is essential for ensuring sustainable agricultural growth and creating new economic opportunities in villages.

Highlighting the government’s achievements in the agriculture sector, the minister stated that since the BJP-led government assumed office in 2018, significant emphasis has been placed on expanding rural infrastructure. Between the financial years 2018-19 and 2025-26, the state has undertaken the development of 204 rural markets with a total investment of approximately ₹461.83 crore, demonstrating the government’s sustained commitment to rural transformation and farmer welfare.

Nath said that investments in rural markets are not merely infrastructure projects but long-term initiatives aimed at improving the rural economy. “Every step taken to strengthen agricultural marketing is an investment in the prosperity of our villages and the dignity of our farmers,” he said. He added that the Betchara Rural Market would also generate opportunities for small traders, local entrepreneurs and self-help groups, thereby contributing to employment generation and local economic growth.

Residents and farmers of the area welcomed the inauguration, expressing optimism that the new market would improve access to buyers, promote fair pricing and create a more efficient trading environment. They also hoped the facility would emerge as a vibrant centre for agricultural commerce, community interaction and rural enterprise.

The inauguration of the Betchara Rural Market is expected to further reinforce the state’s vision of inclusive rural development, improved agricultural marketing and sustainable economic growth across Tripura.
