Agartala: Tripura witnessed a vibrant celebration on Friday as the state observed its first-ever State-Level Chakma Language and Script Day, marking a significant milestone in efforts to preserve and promote the language, script and cultural heritage of the Chakma community.

A colourful rally was organised from Astabal Ground to Rabindra Bhavan, drawing enthusiastic participation from members of the Chakma community, cultural groups, students and supporters of linguistic diversity. Participants dressed in traditional attire and carried messages highlighting the importance of protecting one’s mother tongue and cultural identity.

Minister for Industries and Commerce Santana Chakma, who led the programme, underscored the close relationship between language, script and cultural identity. She described script as the “torchbearer of culture” and language as the foundation upon which a community’s identity is built.

Highlighting India’s tradition of unity in diversity, the minister said Tripura is also home to several indigenous communities, each possessing distinct languages, customs and traditions. She stressed that the Chakma language deserves opportunities for development and promotion alongside other languages spoken across the state.

“From today’s rally, we want to convey that Chakma language is equally important to our people, and we seek its development alongside other languages spoken across the state,” she said.

The rally featured cultural performances, traditional costumes and slogans celebrating linguistic pride. The atmosphere reflected the central message of the programme — encouraging younger generations to love, learn and preserve their mother tongue while remaining connected to their cultural roots.

Participants said state-level recognition of Chakma Language and Script Day carries significance beyond a ceremonial celebration. They expressed hope that the initiative would encourage greater use and development of the language in education, literature, cultural programmes and other public platforms.

The celebration also highlighted Tripura’s linguistic diversity, where indigenous languages coexist with Bengali, Kokborok and several other tongues. Speakers emphasised that protecting such linguistic traditions is essential for maintaining the state’s rich multicultural character.

The first state-level observance was seen as an important step towards strengthening community bonds, creating awareness about the Chakma script and ensuring that the community’s linguistic and cultural heritage is passed on to future generations.
