Agartala, Sep 26: A total of 22 child marriage cases have been reported across various police stations in Tripura over the last three years, with a sharp spike in 2024-2025. The data was revealed by the Minister-in-charge of the Home Department during the recently concluded assembly session in response to questions raised by CPIM MLA Sailendra Chandra Nath.

According to the minister’s written reply, five cases were registered in 2022-2023, three in 2023-2024, and 14 in 2024-2025, indicating a growing concern.

To tackle this social issue, the state government has undertaken a series of preventive and rehabilitative measures. Among the key initiatives is the expansion of Balika Mancha, a model first introduced in South Tripura district. These platforms, now numbering 370 across the state, act as support and awareness hubs for adolescent girls in schools. They help address issues and raise awareness about child marriage and other social challenges.

Additionally, under Mission Sankalpa, 10 villages have been officially declared as “child marriage-free” zones. The mission aims to create community-driven, sustainable change through awareness and collective action.

Childline helplines are also operational 24/7, providing immediate assistance to children in distress. In a move towards rehabilitation, the government provides support to victims of child marriage. Those placed in state-run homes receive care, while others are granted a monthly sponsorship of ₹4,000 to help them pursue education or skill development for self-reliance.

The state government’s multi-pronged approach highlights a growing commitment to eradicate child marriage through education, awareness, legal enforcement, and victim support.
