A major initiative aimed at strengthening pineapple cultivation and improving farmers’ income in Tripura was launched with the introduction of Mission Queen Pineapple, Tripura, a three-year project worth Rs 236 crore. The initiative seeks to enhance production, strengthen the value chain and unlock the commercial potential of the state’s famous Queen Pineapple variety.

The project was launched in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath.

Speaking at the event, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted Tripura’s favourable agro-climatic conditions, stating that nearly 70 percent of the state consists of hilly areas that support pineapple cultivation. He said Tripura is one of the country’s leading producers of pineapple, with the Queen variety enjoying a Geographical Indication (GI) tag and recognition for its distinctive aroma, golden-yellow colour and low-fibre quality.

Despite its premium quality, farmers currently receive comparatively low market prices for their produce. The new project aims to bridge this gap by improving cultivation techniques, post-harvest management, processing facilities and marketing strategies.

The project roadmap covers the period from FY 2026 to FY 2028 and includes coordinated support from multiple ministries. Officials said the initiative would also promote value-added products and utilise pineapple waste products, particularly leaves, to create additional economic opportunities and generate higher income for farmers across the state.
