Agartala, Nov 5: The Tripura government has partnered with IIT Kharagpur to modernise the state’s higher education system, strengthen research infrastructure and equip students with industry-oriented skills in emerging technology sectors, officials said.
A Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed between the state’s Higher Education Department and IIT Kharagpur during a visit by a delegation led by Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman to the institute on October 28.
The delegation included Higher Education Secretary Vikash Singh, Director of Higher Education Animesh Debbarma and other senior officials. IIT Kharagpur was represented by its Director Prof Suman Chakraborty, senior professors, deans and industry partners.
The proposed collaboration, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to promote academic excellence, innovation, research-oriented learning and skill-based education while improving students’ employability.
A key component of the partnership is the proposed establishment of a Centre for Advanced Learning, Research and Innovation in Tripura under the academic guidance and technical mentorship of IIT Kharagpur.
The centre will focus on emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), Drone Technology and Geospatial Sciences.
Officials said the initiative would provide students access to advanced technological knowledge, practical learning and research opportunities in disciplines that are increasingly influencing global industries.
The partnership will also provide academic and technical support to Tripura Technical University in curriculum reforms, faculty development, laboratory expansion, research infrastructure, academic governance and accreditation-related activities.
Another major focus will be the promotion of vocational and skill-based education in government degree colleges. The two institutions are exploring industry-oriented courses, practical training modules, internships and employment-linked programmes to improve students’ professional skills and workplace readiness.
The agreement also envisages capacity-building programmes for educators through faculty mentoring and a Train-the-Trainer model, enabling teachers in Tripura to benefit from IIT Kharagpur’s academic expertise.
Officials said the collaboration would help bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry requirements while creating a stronger research and innovation ecosystem in the state.
The initiative is expected to enhance the quality of higher and technical education and prepare Tripura’s youth to take advantage of emerging opportunities in science, technology and industry.
