Tripura has recorded significant economic growth over the past two years, with the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) increasing from Rs 70,633 crore in 2022-23 to an advance estimate of Rs 89,682 crore in 2024-25. During the same period, the state’s per capita income also witnessed a substantial rise, reaching Rs 1.93 lakh from Rs 1.54 lakh, according to official data released on Monday.

The figures were announced during the state-level celebration of the 20th Statistics Day held at Hall No. 1 of Pragna Bhavan in Agartala. The programme was organised by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Government of Tripura, to commemorate the 133rd birth anniversary of renowned statistician Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, widely regarded as the father of modern statistics in India.

Planning (Statistics), Tribal Welfare, and Handloom, Handicrafts and Sericulture Minister Bikash Debbarma was scheduled to attend the event as the chief guest but could not participate due to prior official engagements. Director of Census Operations Ratan Biswas attended as the special guest, while Director of Economics and Statistics Devananda Reang presided over the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Ratan Biswas highlighted the importance of Census 2027 and informed that the house listing survey for the nationwide census would commence in August this year. He stressed that reliable census data plays a crucial role in enabling governments to formulate evidence-based policies and development programmes.

The theme for Statistics Day 2026, announced by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, was “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data,” underscoring the importance of data standardisation, interoperability, data sharing and institutional collaboration for effective governance and informed policymaking.

More than 250 participants, including senior government officials, heads of departments, faculty members, students and statistical personnel, attended the programme. The Directorate of Economics and Statistics showcased its ongoing statistical surveys, preparations for the National Sample Survey’s 81st Round, and activities related to Census 2027, including house listing operations and self-enumeration.

The department also demonstrated the Sustainable Development Goals Monitoring Web Portal, developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala, and released its annual statistical publication, “Tripura At-a-Glance, 2025-26,” highlighting the state’s socio-economic progress and key development indicators.
