Agartala, February 13: Sushanta Chowdhury, spokesperson of the Tripura government and Minister for Transport, Food and Tourism, on Friday welcomed the formation of a new government in neighbouring Bangladesh. He expressed optimism that the restoration of political stability and democratic governance would significantly strengthen bilateral ties and boost trade and commerce, especially in Tripura’s border areas.

Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat, Chowdhury said the Prime Minister had congratulated the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on moving towards forming a government with a clear mandate. The Prime Minister also conveyed his best wishes and expressed confidence that the electoral victory would deepen India–Bangladesh relations in trade, commerce and overall cooperation.

Chowdhury noted that Bangladesh had experienced a challenging political phase over the past year and a half. He described the recent election as crucial for restoring democracy through people’s participation and mandate. As a neighbouring state sharing an 855-km international border with Bangladesh on three sides, Tripura maintains close social and economic ties with the country.

He emphasised that stability in Bangladesh is vital for resuming development-oriented politics and reviving cross-border trade. Border areas such as Sabroom and other key locations in Tripura hold immense potential for commercial growth, which had slowed during the period of uncertainty.

The Minister also highlighted the long-standing friendship and emotional bond between the two nations, expressing hope that the newly elected government would strengthen cooperation with India.

Separately, he informed that the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha, approved 345 posts across departments to enhance public service delivery and generate employment opportunities.
