Agartala, March 7: The Tripura government has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at modernising bamboo cultivation and strengthening the bamboo-based industry in the state. The plans include adopting scientific methods of bamboo farming, establishing modern nurseries, promoting sustainable conservation practices, improving transport facilities, and building a stronger value chain for bamboo products.

Officials said these measures are expected to boost investor confidence, secure livelihoods for people dependent on the sector, and position Tripura as a reliable hub for bamboo-based enterprises in the region.

Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma announced the initiatives while inaugurating a workshop on Bamboo Value Chain Development at Pragna Bhavan on Friday. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the deep cultural and economic connection between bamboo and the people of Tripura.

“At one time, bamboo was widely used in daily life in the state, and many families depended on bamboo-based work for their livelihood. Even today, the demand for bamboo products remains high,” the Minister said. He added that the government is implementing several projects through the Forest Department to improve the socio-economic conditions of people engaged in bamboo cultivation and bamboo-based industries.

Debbarma also encouraged rural communities and farmers to expand bamboo cultivation on their own land, stating that it can become a sustainable source of income if managed scientifically.

The inaugural session was attended by several senior officials and experts, including Forest Department Principal Secretary R.K. Shyaml, Industries and Commerce Secretary Kiran Gitte who joined via video conference, Tripura Bamboo Mission Director Dr. Deepak Kumar, and World Bank Co-Task Team Leader Raj Ganguly.

Following the inauguration, experts and invited guests delivered presentations on different aspects of the ELEMENT Project, which aims to strengthen the bamboo sector through improved technology, value chain development, and market linkages.

Officials believe that systematic development of bamboo cultivation and industry will not only uplift workers associated with the sector but also attract investment and strengthen Tripura’s position as a trusted destination for bamboo-based products.
