Agartala, October 2: Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Thursday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary and stressed the need for people to uphold his principles of truth, non-violence and peace in their daily lives.
Nallu began the day’s observance at Murti Prangan in the Circuit House premises, where he offered flowers at Gandhi’s statue in the presence of ministers, senior government officials and other dignitaries.
The commemorative programme featured musical performances dedicated to Gandhi, with participants recalling his contribution to India’s freedom movement and his advocacy of non-violent resistance.
Interacting with reporters after the programme, the Governor said Gandhi’s philosophy continued to have relevance in present-day society.
He emphasised the values of non-violence, peace and transparency and urged citizens to make constructive contributions to society and participate in efforts aimed at the country’s development.
“Gandhiji’s ideals are timeless. Each of us must embrace them in our daily lives to build a stronger, more harmonious nation,” Nallu said.
Industry and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma also participated in the programme and paid her respects to Gandhi.
Chakma said the principles of truth, non-violence, peace and selfless service associated with Gandhi should continue to inspire people and guide future generations.
“May the timeless ideals of truth, non-violence, peace, and selfless service preached by Mahatma Gandhi Ji continue to inspire generations and guide us towards a more just, harmonious, and prosperous society,” she said.
West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, senior officials, community leaders and other dignitaries were present during the observance.
Following the programme at the Circuit House, the Governor visited Gandhighat, where further events were held to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti.
The programmes included cultural activities and discussions on Gandhi’s life, his role in India’s freedom struggle and his vision of social harmony.
Participants recalled his emphasis on peaceful coexistence, social unity and individual responsibility, while highlighting the relevance of these values in contemporary public life.
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, whose philosophy of non-violence played a significant role in India’s freedom movement.
Across the country, the occasion is marked through commemorative ceremonies, prayer meetings and cultural programmes.
In Agartala, the observance concluded with tributes to Gandhi and calls for preserving the values associated with his life and teachings.
