Agartala, June 15:
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Monday said the state has witnessed a significant decline in school dropout rates as a result of sustained efforts by the government to strengthen the education sector and promote girls’ education through various welfare initiatives.

Addressing a bicycle distribution programme for Class IX students in Agartala, the Chief Minister emphasized that empowering women through education remains one of the government’s top priorities. He said several schemes have been introduced to ensure that girl students receive quality education and are encouraged to continue their studies.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly stressed that the development of the country is not possible without the development and empowerment of women. Women constitute nearly half of the population, and their progress is essential for the growth of society and the nation,” said Dr. Saha, who also holds the Elementary and Secondary Education portfolios.

Highlighting one of the government’s flagship initiatives, the Chief Minister said around 41,800 bicycles are being distributed to students across the state during the current academic year. The scheme aims to improve school attendance, reduce dropout rates, and make education more accessible, particularly for girls.

“The main objective is to help students reach schools on time and attend classes regularly. It will also encourage girls to pursue their education with greater confidence and enthusiasm,” he said.

Dr. Saha noted that the decline in dropout rates reflects the positive impact of government interventions in the education sector. He said that educating girls not only transforms individual lives but also contributes significantly to family welfare and the overall development of society.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the growing participation of women in public life. He pointed out that women account for more than 50 percent of elected representatives in the state’s three-tier Panchayat system, while nearly half of the representatives in urban local bodies are women.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to education and youth development, Dr. Saha urged students to contribute to the vision of a “Viksit Tripura” and a developed India through discipline, dedication, and social responsibility.

He also cautioned students against the dangers of drug abuse and called upon teachers to remain vigilant. “If any unusual behavioural changes are noticed among students, timely intervention is necessary to protect them from substance abuse and ensure their well-being,” he said.

The programme was attended by Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, School Education Secretary Milind Ramteke, senior officials, teachers, and students.
