Agartala: Sept 30: In recent months, several incidents of violence have been reported in areas such as Gandacherra and Ranirbazar. Notable incidents include the gang rape of a woman, the burning of a woman tied to a papaya tree, and the murder of a youth in a gang attack. The state’s main opposition parties, the CPI(M) and the Congress, have alleged that these incidents indicate a deterioration in the law and order situation in Tripura.

In response to these allegations, Chief Minister and state Home Minister Dr. Manik Saha visited the state police headquarters on Monday morning. He was welcomed with a guard of honor and held a meeting with the Director General of Police, the Inspector General of the Law and Order Department, and senior police officers from all districts. During the meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed the law and order situation over the past year and was informed that the number of criminal incidents in the past year was the lowest in the last decade.

Following the meeting, the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police addressed a press conference. The Chief Minister emphasized that people should feel safe to approach the police station to file complaints and should receive full cooperation from the police. He highlighted that Tripura ranks third from the bottom among the 28 full states in India in terms of law and order. However, he assured that measures are being taken to further reduce criminal incidents and ensure public safety.

The Chief Minister also addressed the allegations made by the opposition, stating that the police were previously used for political purposes. He asserted that the current government allows the police to work independently and does not tolerate criminal activities, regardless of the perpetrator’s background. The police have been instructed to strengthen their relationship with lawyers to ensure thorough investigations.

The Director General of Police has been directed to review old cases at the police station level to ensure justice for families who have not yet received it. There is also a provision to re-investigate old cases according to the law. The Chief Minister has urged the police to address these cases promptly. Regarding traffic issues, the Chief Minister acknowledged a shortage of personnel and mentioned that a meeting would be held to find solutions. He concluded by instructing the police to perform their duties transparently and ensure that people can peacefully enjoy Durga Puja.
