The ongoing Budget session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly has been curtailed by two days, with proceedings now scheduled to conclude on March 23 instead of the earlier planned March 25. The decision comes in view of the upcoming elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which require administrative focus and coordination.

The proposal to shorten the session was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, who highlighted the need to align the Assembly’s schedule with the electoral calendar. With the State Election Commission having already announced the poll dates, the government deemed it necessary to ensure that officials and resources are available for the smooth conduct of the elections.

Earlier, the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), in its March 6 meeting, had finalized the session schedule from March 13 to March 25. However, Nath’s suggestion to reduce the number of sitting days received unanimous support from all political parties, reflecting a shared commitment to facilitating the electoral process without administrative strain.

Following the proposal, Speaker Rampada Jamatia convened a fresh meeting of the BAC, where members collectively agreed to revise the calendar. The consensus decision led to the rescheduling of the session’s conclusion to March 23.

The move underscores the legislature’s effort to strike a balance between governance and electoral responsibilities. By shortening the session, the Assembly has enabled the state machinery to prioritize the conduct of the TTAADC elections, which hold significant importance for the tribal regions of Tripura.

Notably, the decision also marks a rare instance of political unanimity, with ruling and opposition parties coming together in recognition of the importance of the upcoming council polls and the need for a smooth and efficient electoral process.
