Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has directed implementing agencies to expedite the ongoing development of the Khayerpur–Champaknagar stretch of National Highway-8, stressing that the project is crucial for Tripura’s connectivity, trade, and overall economic growth. He described the highway as a “lifeline” for the state, given its importance in linking key regions and facilitating the smooth movement of both passengers and goods.

The Minister issued the directive while chairing a high-level review meeting at the State Secretariat on Monday, where the progress of the project was thoroughly assessed. During the meeting, Chowdhury emphasized the need for proactive problem-solving, regular monitoring, and faster decision-making to address the delays that have slowed down construction work.

Senior officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and other executing agencies participated in the review. They acknowledged that several ground-level challenges, including logistical constraints and site-specific issues, have impacted the pace of progress.

Chowdhury urged all departments and agencies to strengthen coordination and work in close collaboration to overcome these bottlenecks without compromising on quality standards. He made it clear that timely completion of the project is essential for easing traffic movement and improving transport efficiency across Tripura.

“The government is fully committed to strengthening the state’s road infrastructure. All agencies must work in unison with a sense of urgency to ensure timely delivery of this important project,” the Minister stated during the meeting.

He further directed officials to maintain strict quality control measures while accelerating execution, warning that delays in such critical infrastructure projects directly affect public convenience and economic activity.

The Khayerpur–Champaknagar expansion is part of a larger initiative aimed at upgrading Tripura’s road infrastructure network. National Highway-8, in particular, serves as a vital corridor connecting the state with other parts of the northeastern region and beyond, making its timely completion strategically significant.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the issues highlighted during the review and assured that efforts are underway to fast-track the remaining work.
