Agartala, September 27: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said the government was seeking to tap the state’s tourism potential to expand economic activity and create new livelihood avenues, particularly for young people and communities living around tourist destinations.
Saha made the statement on World Tourism Day after attending a live listening programme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 138th episode of Mann Ki Baat at Baishnabtilla Community Hall near Amtali bypass here.
The chief minister said Tripura’s heritage, natural attractions and cultural traditions could provide a strong base for developing tourism and generating economic opportunities.
He said the state government had undertaken development and renovation works at temples, heritage sites and other tourist destinations as part of efforts to attract more visitors.
“Following the path shown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have developed and renovated various temples and heritage sites in Tripura. We are seeing the impact through an increase in tourist footfall,” Saha said.
According to the chief minister, a sustained increase in tourist arrivals could have a wider economic impact by generating business activity, contributing to GSDP and opening up employment opportunities.
“Tourism has a major contribution to the economy, including revenue generation through GSDP and other sources. In many countries and regions, tourism has become a strong economic driver,” he said.
