A serious allegation has emerged against former Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate and self-proclaimed journalist Joydul Hossain, who has been accused of cheating five unemployed youths of nearly ₹10.5 lakh by promising them jobs in the police department.

According to the complaint filed by the victims, Joydul, who identifies himself as the editor of the Boxanagar Press Club, allegedly took money from five candidates who had successfully cleared the 2022 physical and viva tests for constable posts. He assured them that their appointments were “confirmed” through his high-level contacts.

However, when the state government issued appointment letters to 979 selected candidates in April 2025, none of the five aspirants received any job offer. On demanding their money back, Joydul reportedly delayed repayment and threatened them, claiming strong “connections” with senior police officials.

The victims subsequently lodged a cheating case at Kalamchoura Police Station on Tuesday night, detailing the alleged fraud and intimidation.

Local residents have also accused Joydul of misusing his journalist identity for personal gain over the years, alleging that he often leveraged his claimed media role to influence people and extort money under false pretenses.

Police have acknowledged receipt of the complaint, and investigation into the allegations is currently underway.
