Tension gripped Takarjala Assembly constituency in the early hours of Thursday after a group of unidentified miscreants allegedly went on a rampage, indulging in violence and vandalism in the Shantinagar area. The incident has triggered concern among local residents and political workers.
Local MLA Biswajit Kaloi alleged that the armed miscreants were moving around in a four-wheeler, which has reportedly been identified by locals. According to him, the group first targeted publicity materials of the Tipra Motha Party, damaging flags, flex banners, and festoons installed in the area.
The situation escalated when the miscreants allegedly entered an under-construction site of Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) and assaulted workers who were resting there. Kaloi claimed that the workers were beaten and pressured to hand over money. The labourers initially collected Rs 10,000 among themselves, but the attackers allegedly refused to accept the amount and continued demanding more.
Under pressure, the workers reportedly approached a local resident, Rajkumar Debbarma, who operates a micro-ATM, and borrowed Rs 20,000 to hand over to the assailants. On their way back, the miscreants allegedly vandalised the Tipra Motha Party office at Shantinagar.
Kaloi further alleged that the perpetrators identified themselves as “men of Maharaja” while at Rajkumar Debbarma’s house and reportedly threatened a woman, questioning her about her voting preference in the upcoming elections.
An FIR has been lodged against unidentified individuals. Police have reportedly identified the vehicle used in the incident, which bears an Assam registration number. Investigations are underway, and authorities are expected to take action to prevent further escalation and restore normalcy in the area.
