Agartala: May 30: In order to produce more sugarcane on less land, the Agricultural Science Center of Dhalai district of Tripura is cultivating sugarcane in a special scientific method called Ring Pit. The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of the Government of Tripura has given special importance to sugarcane cultivation in the state along with other crops.

It has also announced financial assistance to encourage farmers to cultivate sugarcane. Officials of the Agriculture Science Center of Dhalai district are working relentlessly so that the farmers can cultivate sugarcane in a scientific manner and produce more quantity and good quality sugarcane on less land. They are experimentally cultivating sugarcane in a ring pit method on a plot of about 150 square meters in their center. In this method multiple holes are made in the land at a certain distance. These are about one to one and a half feet deep. In one hole, 20 to 25 two-eyed sugarcane pieces are planted.

Pradeep Das, a senior scientist at the Center for Agricultural Sciences, said that using this method, 30 to 35 per cent more can be produced in the same amount of land than in ordinary sugarcane cultivation. He further said that training has been imparted on sugarcane cultivation in this manner among the sugarcane farmers of Bamanchhara area of Dhalai district. Because at one time a lot of sugarcane was cultivated in those areas. Now they are reducing sugarcane cultivation as there is not much profit. He has taken this initiative to increase the interest of farmers towards sugarcane cultivation.

Although sugarcane is not cultivated in this way in the state of Tripura, it is used in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and other states of India where sugarcane is grown in large quantities. However, he hoped that the sugarcane farmers of the state would also cultivate sugarcane in this manner in the coming days.
