Agartala: Mar 28: The current government is making efforts to register 919 khas properties under the name of Waqf. This information was revealed by the Minority Welfare Department in response to a question raised by legislator Birjit Sinha in the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
According to the Tripura Waqf Board, there are 1,899 Waqf properties in Tripura. Among these, 980 properties are registered under the name of Waqf or Mutawalli, while the remaining 919 properties are recorded as khas properties. In the remarks column of the khas records, it is mentioned that these properties are for the use of the Muslim community. The classification of the 1,899 Waqf properties is as follows: mosques – 602, cemeteries – 920, Eidgahs – 55, dargahs – 5, pir shrines – 47, maktabs/madrasas – 57, and others (land, ponds) – 213.
Additionally, during the surveys conducted in 1960 and the resurvey in 1980, the aforementioned 919 properties were recorded as khas properties. At that time, the government did not take any initiative to register these properties under the name of the Waqf Board. The current government is now making efforts to register these 919 properties under the name of Waqf.
In cases of illegal occupation of Waqf properties, the Waqf Board, through administrative measures, takes initiatives to free the occupied properties from illegal occupants under the Tripura Land Revenue Act and other applicable laws.
