Bishramganja, Aug 11: Police have detained six persons in connection with the violence and vandalism that erupted in Bishramganja on the night of August 5. The unrest followed allegations that a girl from the tribal community was molested inside a moving bus earlier that day.
Authorities said the six accused — identified as Rudra Debbarma, Mani Kumar Debbarma, Bimal Debbarma, Raju Debbarma, Amit Debbarma, and Bidyasagar Debbarma — all hail from the Adivasi Colony under Bishramganja police station limits.
According to police sources, the violence broke out shortly after news of the alleged molestation spread in the locality. Outraged residents reportedly gathered in large numbers, and the situation escalated into vandalism targeting property and public infrastructure. Security forces were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Earlier, one government employee was also detained for interrogation in connection with the unrest. Investigations suggest that the six arrested individuals may have played active roles in inciting or participating in the violence.
The molestation suspect, identified as Sukumar Banik, was arrested soon after the incident. Police have confirmed that he is being interrogated under relevant sections of the law.
Law enforcement officials say the situation in Bishramganja is now under control, but security patrols continue in sensitive areas to prevent further disturbances. The accused are expected to be produced before court, where police will seek remand for further investigation into the violence.
Local leaders and community elders have urged residents to maintain peace and allow the law to take its course. Authorities have also appealed for cooperation from the public in the ongoing investigation.
