A mega eye camp was organised at Santirbazar District Hospital, where 33 patients successfully underwent eye surgeries, hospital officials said on Saturday.

The camp was conducted in the presence of Prof Dr Phani Sarkar from Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), with active support from the hospital’s ophthalmology department headed by Dr Umakanta Acharjee. Officials stated that the initiative aimed to strengthen advanced eye care services at the district level and reduce the need for patients to travel to Agartala for specialised treatment.

According to Dr Acharjee, several of the cases handled during the camp involved complicated eye conditions that were previously referred to tertiary care centres. He said that with improved infrastructure and specialist collaboration, the district hospital is now equipped to conduct complex ophthalmic procedures locally.

“The availability of upgraded facilities and expert guidance has enabled us to manage advanced cases here. This is a significant step toward decentralising specialised healthcare services,” Dr Acharjee said.

Prof Sarkar expressed satisfaction with the hospital’s surgical arrangements and overall infrastructure. He observed that the upgraded operation theatre and the availability of modern equipment have significantly enhanced the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality eye care.

Hospital authorities said such camps not only help clear pending surgical cases but also build local expertise and confidence among medical staff. They added that the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen district-level healthcare services and make advanced treatment more accessible to patients closer to their homes.

Officials indicated that similar specialised camps may be organised in the future to further expand healthcare outreach in the region.
