Agartala, November 17 — In a major step toward addressing the recurring dry-season water crisis in rural Tripura, two newly procured drinking water tanker vehicles were handed over on Monday for residents of Mungiakami and Tulasikhar blocks in Khowai district. These areas face severe shortages every year as local water sources dry up.

The initiative was funded through the convergence of MPLADS and the 15th Finance Commission’s Tied Grants, aimed at ensuring safe water delivery and reducing dependence on contaminated sources that often lead to waterborne diseases among indigenous communities.

During the dry months, shrinking water sources had previously forced villagers—especially women—to depend on unsafe streams, leading to frequent protests and health risks. To address this, Lok Sabha MP Kriti Devi Debbarma utilized MPLAD funds to procure two dedicated tankers for uninterrupted drinking water supply.

At a programme held at the Khowai District Magistrate’s office, MP Debbarma officially flagged off the vehicles and handed them over to the block authorities. The tankers will transport clean water directly to neighbourhoods across both blocks.

Calling the initiative vital for safeguarding public health in remote regions, Debbarma assured that similar measures will soon be extended to other water-scarce areas. She reaffirmed the commitment to improving rural water security and resolving long-standing drinking water shortages across Tripura.
