Agartala: April 12: Kailashahar witnessed a protest march today organized by the Joint Forum, demanding the repeal of the Waqf Amendment Act. The march, which began at Tilabazar, was scheduled to conclude at the old office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. However, tensions arose when the police intervened in the Kubjar area, halting the procession.
The situation escalated into a clash between the protesters and the police, resulting in injuries to several individuals, including police personnel. Among the injured was police officer Debjit Das. Approximately seven individuals were detained by the police in connection with the incident.
District police officials, along with DIG Rathiranjan Debnath, promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation. To maintain order, additional forces, including TSR, CRPF, and BSF, were deployed across the area. According to reports, the police resorted to using tear gas to disperse the crowd after stones were allegedly thrown at them from the rear of the march.
The situation has since been brought under control, and an investigation into the incident is underway. Meanwhile, the tense atmosphere led to a verbal exchange between the district police superintendent and Congress leader Badruzzaman. Speaking to the media, DIG Rathiranjan Debnath confirmed the deployment of a large police force to ensure peace and order in the region.
