The North Tripura District Court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of five accused arrested in connection with the death of delivery boy Prasenjit Sarkar. The accused will be produced before the court again on January 9, 2026, officials said.

The five accused were produced before the court through video conferencing. Earlier, the court had remanded them to judicial custody till December 30, and with the remand period ending on Monday, they were presented again for further orders.

Prasenjit Sarkar’s hanging body was recovered on December 14 from Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, sparking widespread outrage, protests and demands for justice across the state. The incident had drawn sharp reactions from various organisations and members of the public, who alleged that the young delivery worker was subjected to prolonged harassment before his death.

The accused have been identified as Sushmita Bhattacharjee, Sangeeta Bhattacharjee, Sourav Bhattacharjee, Meghadeep Bhattacharjee and Piu Dhar. Police said they have been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 103(1) related to murder. Other sections invoked in the case include Sections 329(4), 115(2) and 3(5), reflecting the seriousness of the allegations.

According to investigating officials, the police achieved a major breakthrough by arresting all five accused within 14 days of the incident. The arrests were carried out from different locations in Assam’s Karimganj district and the Churaibari area of North Tripura, following sustained raids and coordinated operations.

The case reportedly involves allegations of sustained mental and physical harassment of the victim, which investigators believe ultimately led to his death. Police said the investigation is continuing, with efforts underway to collect further evidence and complete the charge sheet within the stipulated time.

Authorities have assured that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness and that a thorough probe will be conducted to ensure justice for the victim. Meanwhile, family members and rights groups continue to demand exemplary punishment for those found guilty in the case.
