Agartala, December 12:
Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Thursday openly endorsed the recent remarks of CEM Purna Chandra Jamatia, acknowledging that the BJP might have gained power in Tripura because Tipra Motha fielded candidates in 42 constituencies during the 2023 Assembly elections. His admission marks a rare moment of political introspection within the party.

Speaking to reporters after addressing a public meeting in Manaipathar, Debbarman said, “It is a fact that if we had restricted ourselves to the 20 ST-reserved constituencies, the poll outcome could have been completely different. In hindsight, we have realised that we should not allow any party a backdoor entry. This time, we believe we shouldn’t contest more than 25 to 30 seats.”

Responding to questions on Tipra Motha’s political strength, the TMP chief asserted that public support remained their biggest asset. “The response from people speaks volumes about our strength. Leaders from other parties must understand that those trying to suppress Tiprasa using money or administrative power will not succeed. We will continue speaking for our people’s rights, and results will eventually favour us,” he said.

Debbarman dismissed recent remarks made by certain BJP leaders, accusing them of speaking against Tipra Motha to secure election tickets. “Some BJP leaders want tickets for themselves, which is why they are targeting us. If they get tickets, they will get access to election funds,” he alleged.

On the Tiprasa Accord, he clarified that signing the agreement does not mean the party will remain silent. “We must continue raising our voice for our rights. Tripura is the only state where the tribal council is not empowered to handle land rights. This is our core issue, and we will fight for it,” he reiterated.

Debbarman’s comments underline the party’s renewed determination to push for stronger indigenous rights and a more strategic political approach ahead of future elections.
