Agartala: Nov 09: In the aftermath of the devastating floods in August, the Director of Agriculture, Sardindu Das, visited hybrid rice fields in the flood-affected areas of Shantir Bazar. The severe flooding had caused significant damage to crops, impacting the livelihoods of local farmers, particularly in Shantir Bazar, where most of the population relies on agriculture.
To support the farmers, the Bogafa and Jolaibari Agriculture Departments have been working tirelessly to help the affected farmers resume rice cultivation. Under their guidance, hybrid rice seeds were distributed to all farmers in the region to ensure they could double their income and maintain regular rice production. Thanks to these efforts, many farmers have reported excellent growth in hybrid rice within just 70 days.
During his visit, Director Sardindu Das inspected the fields and engaged with the farmers to understand the progress of hybrid rice cultivation. Speaking to the media after the inspection, he shared that the state has set a target to cultivate hybrid rice on 10,000 hectares this year. He noted that many farmers in Shantir Bazar were surprised by the success of the rice cultivation, which had exceeded their expectations.
Additionally, the Director highlighted that for the upcoming rabi season, the target is set for 30,000 hectares of hybrid Boro rice cultivation. He also pointed out that the recent floods had deposited silt on agricultural lands, which has enhanced soil fertility, further benefiting rice production.
Before concluding his visit, the Director instructed Sumit Kumar Saha, the Agriculture Officer of the South District, to conduct a full-day inspection of the agricultural lands. However, it was noted that the officer did not comply with the directive, leaving the area without conducting the inspection.
