Agartala, December 20:
Police on Saturday seized a huge quantity of dry cannabis from the Ambassa naka checkpoint in Tripura’s Dhalai district, once again highlighting the persistent challenge of drug trafficking through the state. The seizure was made during routine checking of vehicles at the Betbagan checkpoint under Ambassa police station limits.

According to police sources, the contraband was recovered from a vehicle travelling from Agartala towards neighbouring Assam. During a thorough search of the vehicle bearing registration number TR01 AP 1631, police recovered around 150 kilograms of dry cannabis packed in 79 separate packets. The consignment was concealed in the vehicle in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

Sub-Inspector Joy Thapa said the estimated black market value of the seized cannabis is around ₹15 lakh. He added that the recovery was made as part of intensified checking at the naka, following inputs about the possible movement of narcotics through the area.

During the search operation, the driver of the vehicle managed to flee from the spot, taking advantage of the situation and evading the police personnel present at the checkpoint. Despite efforts to apprehend him, the driver escaped. However, the vehicle used for transporting the contraband was seized on the spot, and the entire consignment of cannabis was confiscated.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Ambassa police station. An investigation has been launched to identify the absconding driver and to trace other individuals involved in the drug trafficking network linked to the seizure.

Senior police officials said raids and naka checking have been intensified across Dhalai district to curb the movement of narcotics, particularly along routes connecting Tripura with neighbouring states. They added that efforts are underway to gather technical and intelligence inputs to dismantle the larger racket behind the operation.

The seizure has created a sensation in the area, with residents welcoming the police action and urging authorities to continue strict measures against drug trafficking in the region.
