Kalyanpur: Serious allegations of negligence and poor execution of development work have surfaced in Kalyanpur after local MLA Pinaki Das Choudhury raised strong objections over the quality of construction of newly built stalls near Kalyanpur Higher Secondary School. The stalls were reportedly constructed with the objective of creating self-employment opportunities for local youth.
During a field inspection of around 18 newly constructed stalls, the MLA expressed dissatisfaction after observing what he termed as substandard construction practices. According to reports, tiles in several portions had allegedly been laid directly over soft mud using only sand and a thin layer of cement mixture, rather than being placed over a proper solid foundation as required for durable construction.
In a dramatic moment during the inspection, Pinaki Das Choudhury personally lifted one of the tiles to demonstrate the alleged flaws in the work and questioned the supervising engineer present at the site. He reportedly asked whether such a method of construction could be considered acceptable under any engineering standards.
The inspection also revealed another major issue as water leakage was found from the roofs of the newly built stalls. The discovery further intensified the MLA’s concerns, particularly because the structures have not yet been officially inaugurated.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over the matter, the MLA contacted representatives of the concerned agencies over the phone and questioned how such deficiencies could appear in newly completed infrastructure projects.
Speaking to reporters later, Pinaki Das Choudhury emphasized that public money must be used responsibly and warned against any misuse of taxpayers’ funds. He stated that separate tenders had been floated for the construction of the stalls and beautification works, but repeated complaints regarding poor-quality execution had raised serious concerns.
He informed that agencies responsible for the work have been directed to rectify the shortcomings within one day. The MLA also made it clear that corruption, negligence, and substandard work in development projects would not be tolerated and warned of strict action against those responsible.
His strong stand has sparked widespread discussion in the area, with many local residents appreciating the demand for accountability in public projects.
