Agartala, July 4: A major narcotics smuggling attempt came to light early Thursday morning when a vehicle loaded with phensedyl overturned near the gate of the Bishalgarh BSF camp at around 2 AM. The incident has raised serious questions about law enforcement vigilance and possible collusion.

The vehicle, bearing registration number TR 07A 1842, was reportedly headed toward Kamalnagar when the driver lost control, causing it to flip and spill cartons of phensedyl—an illegal codeine-based cough syrup—worth several lakhs of rupees onto the highway.

Before police could arrive at the scene, eyewitnesses reported that several individuals quickly transferred a large portion of the consignment into a black Scorpio and fled. Alarmingly, the getaway vehicle had allegedly been spotted circling the Bishalgarh police station hours before the incident, leading to suspicions of prior coordination and planning.

A police official at the scene confirmed, “We recovered 40 cartons of phensedyl along with several loose bottles. The vehicle has been seized, but no arrests have been made so far.”

Despite the incident taking place near both the Bishalgarh SDPO office and a BSF camp, no suspects were apprehended at the scene, fueling criticism from local residents and activists.

Locals allege that Bishalgarh has become a regular route for phensedyl smuggling, and have accused certain police personnel of turning a blind eye—or worse, aiding traffickers. They have demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and stricter vigilance in the area.

With no arrests made yet, the incident underscores the growing challenge of drug trafficking in the region and the urgent need for coordinated action between local police, BSF, and narcotics control authorities.
