Serious concerns have emerged over the functioning of the dialysis centre at Dharmanagar District Hospital in North Tripura, with patients and their families alleging inadequate infrastructure, poor management, and frequent disruptions to a life-saving medical service.

The dialysis unit, reportedly operated by a private agency with government funding, has come under scrutiny following complaints that it has failed to provide uninterrupted treatment despite receiving financial support over the years. According to local sources, the facility lacks essential infrastructure, with the most serious issue being the absence of a dependable power backup system.

Patients’ relatives allege that dialysis sessions are frequently interrupted during power outages, forcing patients to wait for extended periods before treatment can resume. “When electricity goes off in the middle of dialysis, everything comes to a halt. Patients are left in pain, anxiety, and uncertainty while waiting for power to return,” said a family member of a patient. They claim the lack of a functional backup generator has exposed patients to unnecessary physical and emotional hardship.

The reported shortcomings have drawn criticism from community members and health activists, who argue that interruptions in dialysis treatment can pose serious health risks. They have urged the authorities to immediately ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and install reliable backup systems to prevent further disruptions. “Dialysis is an essential, life-saving treatment, not a service that can be delayed because of infrastructure failures. The administration must take urgent corrective action,” a local health activist said.

The controversy has also renewed debate over the quality of healthcare services in North Tripura. Residents have called for a transparent review of the dialysis centre’s infrastructure, equipment, operational standards, and monitoring mechanisms. They have demanded accountability, stating that if allegations of negligence or mismanagement are substantiated, both the private operator and officials responsible for oversight should be held accountable.

Despite growing public concern, neither the Dharmanagar District Hospital administration nor the private agency managing the dialysis centre has issued an official statement. The silence has further fuelled public frustration, with many now looking to the state government for prompt intervention. For many residents, the situation at Dharmanagar has become a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted critical medical services across Tripura.
