Agartala, July 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Tripura, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts till July 13, with authorities stepping up preparedness measures amid the possibility of flooding, landslides and widespread disruption.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, the intense rainfall is being triggered by an active monsoon system, including a low-pressure area over Uttar Pradesh and cyclonic circulations over Bangladesh and Assam, which are drawing large volumes of moisture into the region.

Several parts of the state have already received substantial rainfall during the past 24 hours. Sabroom recorded the highest rainfall at 83.5 mm, followed by Mohanbhog (69.6 mm), Khumulwng (59.5 mm), Udaipur (50 mm) and Khowai (36.2 mm). Meteorologists have warned that rainfall intensity is likely to increase over the next three days.

The district-wise forecast indicates that West, Khowai, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura are expected to experience very heavy rainfall on July 10 and 11, while heavy rain is likely over the remaining districts.

On July 11–12, very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over West, Sepahijala and South Tripura, with heavy showers forecast in other districts. The weather system is likely to remain active on July 12–13, bringing heavy rainfall once again to West, Khowai, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura.

The IMD has cautioned that the prolonged rainfall may trigger urban flooding, waterlogging, traffic disruptions, damage to roads and bridges, localized crop losses, closure of tourist destinations and frequent landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas.

In view of the forecast, district administrations, municipal bodies and disaster management authorities have been placed on high alert. Officials have been directed to keep emergency response teams ready, identify shelters and relief centres, clear road blockages promptly and maintain close surveillance of landslide-prone locations.

Authorities have also advised the evacuation of residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas wherever necessary. Measures have been initiated to support affected farmers, including plans for compensation and promotion of flood-resilient agricultural practices.

The administration has urged residents to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and strictly follow weather advisories issued by the IMD and local authorities as Tripura prepares for one of the strongest monsoon spells of the season.
