Agartala: May 14: The largest dairy unit in North East India is set to be inaugurated in Tripura on May 17, announced Ratan Ghosh, Chairman of the Gomati Cooperative Milk Producers Union, during a press conference on Wednesday. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh will formally inaugurate the facility. He will be joined by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, ARDD Minister Sudhangshu Das, and Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia.

Ghosh shared that the new dairy unit, named Gomati Plant II, is located in Bamutia and has a processing capacity of 40,000 litres of milk, a significant upgrade from the existing Indranagar unit which can handle only 5,000 litres at a time.

Hailing the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Tripura state government, Ghosh credited them for making the project a reality. He noted that the central government provided substantial funding, while the state government allocated ₹2 crore in the latest budget exclusively for the Gomati Milk Union.

Highlighting the scale of dairy farming in the state, Ghosh informed that 5,000 farmers are currently affiliated with 178 milk producer unions. Reflecting on recent challenges, he mentioned the August 2024 floods, during which farmers suffered significant losses. “We tried our best to support them during that difficult time,” he said.

Other key officials, including Board of Directors Sepal Debnath and CMD Bibhas Bhattacharjee, were also present at the press conference and expressed optimism about the dairy sector’s future in Tripura. The inauguration of Gomati Plant II is expected to significantly boost dairy production and support the livelihoods of thousands of local farmers.
