Agartala, March 30: In a firm step against the practice of child marriage, officials from the South Tripura District Administration, in coordination with Childline authorities, rescued a minor girl who had been living as a married woman in Baikhora on Sunday. The rescue operation was conducted at the residence of Nilesh Nandi, son of Ratan Nandi, in West Charakbai area under Santirbazar subdivision.

According to sources, the girl, believed to be under the legal age of marriage, had been staying with the accused as his wife for some time. Acting on a confidential tip-off, a team comprising Childline personnel, District Child Marriage (DCM) official Kakali Saha, and staff from the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Santirbazar, swiftly reached the location and carried out the rescue operation.

Following the intervention, the minor was safely removed from the premises and later placed in a government-recognised shelter home, where she is currently under care and protection. Officials ensured that the process was conducted sensitively, keeping the well-being of the girl as the top priority.

However, the incident has sparked concern among local residents and activists. While the rescue has been welcomed, questions are being raised regarding the lack of clarity on legal proceedings against those involved in facilitating or participating in the child marriage. Notably, DCM Kakali Saha refrained from making any public statement after the operation, leading to speculation about the administration’s next course of action.

Residents pointed out that despite repeated awareness campaigns and strict directives issued by the District Magistrate to curb child marriage, such incidents continue to surface. Many have expressed disappointment that individuals are still able to violate the law with apparent ease.

Locals and civil society members are now demanding firm and visible legal action against the accused to set a strong precedent and deter future violations. They stressed that rescue operations alone may not be sufficient unless accompanied by strict enforcement of laws under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

The administration is yet to officially confirm whether criminal charges will be filed.
