A 45-year-old man allegedly died by suicide at his in-laws’ residence in the Malaynagar area under Srinagar police station on Friday night. The deceased has been identified as Manabendra Chakraborty (45), police said.
According to initial reports, Chakraborty had an argument with his wife before going to bed on Friday. Police sources stated that he was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. “We have been informed that the deceased was involved in a heated altercation with his wife and later hanged himself. It has also come to our notice that he was under the influence of alcohol. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” a police official said.
Family members discovered him the following morning and alerted authorities. Police reached the spot and initiated legal procedures. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered for further inquiry.
Speaking to the media, Anjana Sarkar, the wife of the deceased, said her husband was a habitual drinker and frequently misbehaved with her after consuming alcohol. She said the couple had a quarrel over a loan on Friday night. “We had an argument regarding a loan. I did not notice anything unusual in his behaviour afterwards. He appeared normal. In the morning, we found that he had taken the extreme step,” she said.
Police officials stated that they are examining all aspects of the case, including statements from family members and neighbours, to rule out any other angle. Further investigation is currently in progress.
