Agartala, August 3: An acute administrative crisis has emerged in the education sector of Tripura’s Ramchandraghat Assembly Constituency, where nine government schools have been functioning without permanent headmasters, raising serious concerns over academic administration and the quality of education.

Highlighting the issue, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has written to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, urging the state government to immediately appoint qualified headmasters to the affected schools. In his letter, the MLA described the institutions as “orphaned schools,” stating that the prolonged absence of regular administrative leadership has severely hampered their functioning.

According to Debbarma, the crisis affects both higher secondary and high schools across the constituency. Gourangatila, Ratanpur and Ampura Higher Secondary Schools are currently operating without both headmasters and assistant headmasters, creating significant administrative challenges.

Similarly, Baijalbari, Baramaydan and Birchandrapur Higher Secondary Schools do not have permanent headmasters and are being managed by only one assistant headmaster each. The situation at Baramaydan Higher Secondary School is expected to worsen further as its lone assistant headmaster is scheduled to retire in September, potentially leaving the institution without any senior administrative officer.

The problem also extends to KMR High School, Debendra Choudhury High School and Wandalwang High School, all of which have been functioning without regular headmasters for an extended period.

While appreciating the Chief Minister’s recent initiative of laying the foundation stone for a new academic building at Baijalbari Higher Secondary School, Debbarma stressed that improved infrastructure alone cannot ensure quality education. He emphasized that efficient academic leadership is equally essential for maintaining discipline, implementing government programmes, monitoring teachers and ensuring the overall development of students.

“Buildings can provide better facilities, but without capable headmasters, schools cannot function effectively. Students ultimately bear the consequences of administrative vacancies,” the MLA stated in his appeal.

Parents, teachers and local residents have also expressed deep concern over the prolonged vacancies, alleging that the absence of permanent leadership has affected discipline, academic planning and the smooth implementation of educational activities. They urged the state government to expedite the appointment process, warning that continued delays could further weaken public confidence in the government school system and adversely impact students’ future.
