Agartala, Oct 24: Tension gripped Kamalpur sub-division in Tripura’s Dhalai district after over 12 people, including government officials and traders, were injured when Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS) activists allegedly resorted to attacks, arson, and looting during a 24-hour statewide shutdown on Thursday evening.

Officials said a large contingent of security forces, including the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has been deployed to maintain order. Dhalai District Magistrate Vivek H.B. imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), barring assembly of more than four persons, carrying weapons, delivering provocative speeches, and movement of vehicles in Kamalpur.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, visited the Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Agartala on Friday to meet the injured. Of the 12 injured, three were referred to Agartala, while others are undergoing treatment at Kamalpur Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital. The injured include Salema BDO Abhijit Majumdar, Engineer Animesh Saha, SDPO Samudra Debbarma, and trader Biplab Deb.

Saha said the attackers used bamboo sticks, iron rods, and slingshots to target officials and traders, looting shops and even snatching jewellery from women. “These are disgraceful acts. I have directed police to take stern action. We will not yield to pressure,” he told reporters.

The 24-hour bandh was called by TCS, affiliated with the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), led by MLA Ranjit Debbarma, to press for its eight-point demands, including deportation of illegal migrants.

The agitation also disrupted train services as activists blocked railway tracks at several points, forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway to cancel or short-terminate nine trains, including four express services, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
