Teliamura, June 1: Responding to growing public concerns over severe waterlogging and drainage problems along the under-construction National Highway stretch between Icharbil and Korailong Chowmuhani, Tripura Legislative Assembly’s Chief Whip and Teliamura MLA Kalyani Saha Roy on Monday took proactive steps to address the issue and ensure relief for affected residents.

Speaking at a municipal-level meeting held at the Teliamura Municipal Council conference hall, Roy acknowledged the hardships faced by local people due to the ongoing highway construction work connecting Khowai and Agartala through Teliamura. She noted that the development activities have significantly disrupted traditional earthen drainage channels, leading to water accumulation in several residential areas during the ongoing monsoon season.

“With continuous rainfall, water is entering homes and inundating localities, causing immense difficulties for residents. The issue demands immediate attention and coordinated action from all concerned departments,” Roy said during the meeting.

Following the discussion, the MLA led a comprehensive field inspection of the affected areas. The inspection team included the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO), Executive Officer (EO), engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD), Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) Department, Water Resources Department, representatives from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and Siptech. The visit was also attended by the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Municipal Council, along with councillors.

During the on-site review, officials examined the extent of the drainage blockage and discussed several immediate and long-term solutions. Among the measures proposed was the construction of temporary earthen drains to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater and prevent further flooding during the monsoon.

Roy emphasized that the administration and implementing agencies have already begun taking necessary steps to mitigate the problem. She instructed the concerned departments to work in close coordination and expedite relief measures.

“We are committed to resolving these issues at the earliest. People’s welfare remains our top priority, and no citizen should continue to suffer because of construction-related negligence or delays,” Roy asserted.

Residents welcomed the intervention and expressed hope that the proposed measures would bring much-needed relief from recurring waterlogging in the area.
