Agartala: Nov 21: Ahead of the historic date of November 26th, a series of programs have been organized across Tripura to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the 2020 farmers’ movement. On Thursday, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Tripura unit of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) jointly held a press conference to outline these activities. Pavitra Kar, State Committee Secretary of AIKS, shared details about the planned events, highlighting that a “warning assembly” will be held across the country on November 26, 2024. This assembly aims to issue a formal warning to the central government, giving a three-month deadline to address the demands of workers and farmers. If the government fails to take action, a larger movement will be launched.
Shankar Prasad Dutta, State General Secretary of CITU, emphasized that the movement’s primary focus is the fulfillment of workers’ and farmers’ demands. He criticized the central government’s decision to repeal 29 labor laws and replace them with four labor codes, which he claimed have impeded workers’ rights to an eight-hour workday and minimum wages. In response, the movement will demand an eight-hour workday, a minimum wage of Rs. 26,000 for workers, and a pension of Rs. 10,000 for workers over the age of 60. Both the CITU and AIKS have planned these nationwide programs, which will also include events at the state level to push for these essential reforms.
