Agartala, June 7: Tripura State President of Jamiat-Ulama-e-Hind, Mufti Taibur Rahman, on Saturday strongly condemned the incidents of communal tension reported from Udaipur during Eid-ul-Zuha celebrations. Calling for peace and communal harmony, the senior Islamic cleric urged the state government to take immediate steps to prevent further escalation.

Addressing the media, Mufti Rahman expressed concern over the rising interference in religious practices of the Muslim community. Referring to a specific incident, he said, “A prayer rug belonging to a Muslim man was torn apart in Udaipur during the tensions. The prayer rug holds deep religious significance in Islam, and its desecration is highly disrespectful.”

He added that law enforcement agencies exist to deal with violations, and taking matters into one’s own hands only worsens communal relations. “If anyone violates any law, the police are there to act. But over the past seven to eight years, we have seen increasing instances of arbitrary interference in Muslim religious matters, which is extremely concerning,” Rahman said.

Urging Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to intervene, the cleric called on the state administration to take firm action against elements who provoke discord and bring disrepute to the government. “These actions not only hurt religious sentiments but also damage the image of the government. I request the Chief Minister to rein in such forces,” he added.

Mufti Rahman also said that he had already issued instructions to members of the Muslim community to remain cautious and ensure that their religious practices, especially the animal sacrifices on Eid, do not hurt the sentiments of their Hindu neighbors.

“We must all strive to maintain harmony. Festivals are meant to bring people together, not drive them apart,” he concluded.
