In a major initiative aimed at improving the effectiveness of GST operations, the State Taxes Organization on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The collaboration seeks to upgrade the skills and knowledge of officials, merchant associations, and business communities involved in the Goods and Services Tax system.

The signing ceremony took place at the Conference Hall of the State Secretariat, where a brief but meaningful program was organized to commemorate the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Finance Secretary Apurba Roy emphasized the critical need for continuous training for all GST stakeholders. “For the welfare of the people and the nation, effective implementation of GST requires capacity building across all levels. This MoU is a practical and timely decision,” he said, underscoring the importance of strengthening institutional capabilities.

Speaking at the event, CA Rajendra Kumar, Chairman of the GST and Indirect Taxes Committee of ICAI, highlighted the institute’s prominent role in India’s financial ecosystem. He noted that ICAI has already signed similar agreements with 11 states, including Tripura. “Chartered Accountants act as a vital bridge between taxpayers and the government, ensuring smooth coordination and improved compliance,” he added.

The program opened with a welcome address by Dr. Akinchan Sarkar, Chief Commissioner of State Taxes. Among the dignitaries present were ICAI member CA Smita Mishra, senior Finance Department officials, and other key stakeholders from the taxation and business sectors.

This strategic partnership is expected to facilitate structured and high-quality training modules, promote efficient GST administration, and enhance transparency in tax practices across the state. Officials expressed confidence that the MoU will contribute significantly to strengthening the GST framework and improving service delivery for businesses and citizens alike.
