AGARTALA: OCTOBER 2: Hajagiri dance is very popular among Janjatis in Tripura. This year, Hajagiri dancer Satyaram Reang(85) from Tripura was nominated for the Padma Shree award, he passed away this morning. He was suffering from chronic diseases for a long time. He breathed his last this morning. Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha expressed deep grief over his demise. Besides, Union Minister of State Pratima Bhowmik and MP Biplab Kumar Dev were deeply shocked.
Satyaram Reang was a resident of Shantirbazar in South Tripura district. He founded a school to promote Hajagiri dance. In that school he is teaching young people Hajagiri dance. He made tireless efforts to protect and promote Hajagiri dance at home and abroad. For his outstanding contribution Satyaram Reang was awarded the Sangeet Natika Academy Award by the Government of India. He passed away this morning.
On his demise, the Chief Minister said that his unique role in presenting the state’s Janjati folk dance Hajagiri to the world will be remembered forever. He prayed to God to grant peace to the departed soul and to give strength to the family and countless benefactors to bear the loss.
MP Biplab Kumar Dev said, Padmashree Satyaram Reang was one of the pioneers of the traditional Hajagiri dance which is intertwined with the culture of Tripura. The contribution of this proverbial idol artist to the scope of Tripura’s folk culture in the national, above all international arena will remain in everyone’s hearts with reverence.
Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik is deeply saddened by the demise of Padmashri Satyaram Reang, the legendary artist of traditional Hajagiri dance. He prayed to God to bless his departed soul and give strength to his family to bear the bereavement.
On this day, he said, the people of the state will always remember his contribution in the development of the traditional Hajagiri dance of the state and in presenting this dance in the world court.
