Agartala, May 12: In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a 75-year-old grandfather and his 11-month-old grandson lost their lives in a horrific road accident on Sunday night in the Charilam area under the Bishalgarh subdivision of Sepahijala district.
The fatal collision occurred near the Parimal Chowmuhni bridge when an over-speeding ambulance rammed head-on into a private four-wheeler carrying the family. Narayan Bhowmik, a 75-year-old local grocer, died on the spot due to the impact of the crash. His grandson, Adrik Bhowmik, just 11 months old, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to GBP Hospital in Agartala. Despite doctors’ efforts, the infant succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief over the entire locality, with neighbors and relatives mourning the untimely demise of both grandfather and grandson.
Three other family members — Dolly Rani Bhowmik, Sangita Bhowmik, and Pintu Bhowmik — were also inside the vehicle during the accident. They sustained varying degrees of injuries. Initially treated at Bishalgarh Hospital, they were later transferred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for further medical care.
Following the accident, local residents alerted emergency services. Fire service personnel promptly reached the spot and undertook rescue operations to extricate the injured from the mangled vehicle. Both vehicles involved in the accident were severely damaged.
The local police have launched an investigation into the incident and are looking into whether negligence or rash driving on the part of the ambulance driver was responsible for the deadly crash.
This tragic event has raised concerns about the increasing number of road accidents due to reckless driving, even by emergency vehicles. Locals have demanded stricter traffic regulation enforcement in the area to prevent such accidents in the future.
