New Delhi, March 28: The Government of India on Saturday confirmed that 20 Indian-flagged vessels carrying around 540 Indian seafarers are currently operating in the western Persian Gulf region and are being closely monitored amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways stated that comprehensive measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and security of Indian vessels and crew members in the region. Authorities have assured that all Indian seafarers remain safe, with no incidents involving Indian-flagged ships reported in the past 24 hours.

The monitoring is being carried out by the Directorate General of Shipping in coordination with ship owners, Recruitment and Placement Service License (RPSL) agencies, and Indian diplomatic missions abroad. Officials emphasized that constant communication is being maintained to respond swiftly to any emerging situation.

As part of ongoing efforts, DG Shipping has facilitated the safe repatriation of more than 938 Indian seafarers so far, including 25 individuals in the last 24 hours alone. This reflects the government’s proactive approach in safeguarding Indian nationals working in sensitive maritime zones.

Meanwhile, port operations across the country continue to function smoothly without any congestion. State Maritime Boards from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry have all reported normal operations, ensuring that maritime trade and logistics remain unaffected.

The Ministry of External Affairs is also actively engaged, coordinating with Indian Missions and maintaining regular contact with the Indian community in the Gulf and West Asia. Around 4,97,000 passengers have returned to India from the conflict-affected region since February 28, highlighting the scale of evacuation and assistance efforts.

Sources indicated that two additional merchant vessels carrying petroleum products for India were expected to transit through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, despite disruptions caused by regional tensions.

To enhance maritime security, the Indian Navy has deployed warships near key ports and transit routes to provide assistance and ensure safe passage. More vessels are expected to arrive through the Strait in the coming days.

The government continues to closely monitor developments, reiterating that the safety, security, and welfare of Indian citizens remain its top priority.
