Agartala: Jan 20: Sushanta Chowdhury, the state transport and tourism minister, announced that the government is planning to develop eco-tourism at the Unakoti Sonamukhi tourist destination and introduce toy train services for tourists. The Unakoti site, recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India and designated as a heritage tourism destination, will undergo further development to enhance its appeal as an eco-tourism hub. The minister revealed that a substantial investment of Rs. 70 crore will be allocated for these development activities.

The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting tourism as a key sector for economic growth, particularly by attracting both domestic and international visitors. As part of this effort, a special tourism circuit is being planned in South Tripura. This circuit will include popular tourist spots like the Pilak archaeological site in Jolaibari, the Mahamuni Buddhist Pagoda, Maitri Setu (a bridge connecting India and Bangladesh), and the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary. The initiative aims to provide a comprehensive travel experience, showcasing the region’s cultural, historical, and natural heritage.

Chowdhury further highlighted that the government’s tourism development initiatives are designed not only to enhance the state’s tourism infrastructure but also to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the local population, particularly the unemployed youth. While acknowledging that providing government jobs for all may not be feasible, the minister stressed that tourism could offer an alternative path to employment, empowering local communities and fostering economic growth.

The proposed development projects and the creation of a tourism circuit are expected to boost Tripura’s tourism sector, contributing to the state’s overall economic development and providing new opportunities for the younger generation.
