Agartala, September 9:
Rural women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Gomati district have gained a new platform to market their agricultural produce with the opening of the Gomati Fresh Vegetable Mart at Dhajanagar Gram Panchayat under Tepania R.D. Block.
The mart was inaugurated by Gomati District Magistrate and Collector Rinku Lather. Supported by the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), the initiative has been implemented through the Block Mission Management Unit (BMMU), Tepania.
The Natun Disha Cluster Level Federation (CLF) has been entrusted with operating the outlet, which will primarily market fresh vegetables cultivated by SHG members affiliated with the federation.
The initiative seeks to address the marketing constraints commonly faced by small-scale producers. With a dedicated retail outlet available locally, SHG members can bring their produce directly to consumers and potentially secure better returns from their agricultural activities.
The new arrangement is expected to strengthen the role of rural women not only as producers but also as participants in the marketing and commercial aspects of agriculture. Direct market access can help them develop more sustainable livelihood activities and reduce dependence on informal channels.
For consumers, the mart provides an additional source of locally grown vegetables. The direct producer-to-consumer model is expected to make fresh produce more accessible while strengthening the connection between nearby farming communities and local households.
Officials said the project aligns with TRLM’s objective of helping SHG members develop sustainable income-generating activities by improving access to markets and creating opportunities for collective enterprise.
The role of the Natun Disha CLF also gives SHG members an opportunity to gain practical experience in managing a business collectively. Activities such as handling sales, organising produce, maintaining supplies and dealing with customers can strengthen their entrepreneurial and management skills.
The initiative could also encourage greater vegetable production among participating SHG members. With a structured outlet and a local customer base, producers may be able to plan cultivation more closely around market demand.
Beyond its immediate retail function, the vegetable mart represents a broader attempt to strengthen the rural value chain. By bringing production and marketing closer together, the initiative can help retain more economic activity within the local community.
The project also demonstrates how livelihood programmes can move beyond financial assistance and focus on creating sustainable commercial opportunities for rural households.
The launch of the Gomati Fresh Vegetable Mart is expected to provide a practical platform for women-led agricultural enterprises while giving consumers access to locally produced vegetables.
The initiative marks another step towards strengthening rural entrepreneurship and creating more dependable livelihood opportunities through collective action and improved market connectivity.
