Kathmandu, Sept 10: Amid widespread speculation, organisers of an online poll involving Nepal’s Gen Z clarified on Tuesday that the exercise was never intended to select an interim head of government. The clarification comes after reports suggested that young Nepali citizens were using platforms like Discord to elect a political leader, sparking confusion and debate.

The organisers emphasised that the poll was aimed solely at choosing a representative who could present the aspirations, priorities, and concerns of the younger generation. “It is not linked with anyone who is going to form the government,” they stated, underlining that the exercise should not be mistaken for a political mandate.

The poll, which quickly gained traction among Nepal’s digitally active youth, was designed as a symbolic move to highlight the increasing role of Gen Z in the nation’s socio-political discourse. With a growing presence online and offline, this demographic has been vocal about issues ranging from employment opportunities to climate change, education reform, and digital freedom.

Observers noted that the misunderstanding stemmed from the heightened political volatility in Nepal, where the leadership crisis has left citizens looking for alternative voices. Against this backdrop, the symbolic poll was mistakenly reported as an attempt to form a parallel decision-making process.

Political analysts believe the incident reflects a larger trend of youth frustration with traditional politics. While the organisers insisted the poll had no binding authority, they admitted the overwhelming participation indicated a strong desire for meaningful involvement in governance.

As Nepal navigates its uncertain political climate, the clarification serves as a reminder that digital platforms are becoming powerful spaces for civic engagement, especially among younger generations eager to shape the country’s future.
