In a major step toward strengthening emergency healthcare services in Tripura, GBP Hospital, Agartala, has inaugurated a new dedicated emergency operation theatre (OT) to provide round-the-clock surgical support for critically ill patients. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the hospital’s capacity to manage emergency cases and reduce delays in life-saving procedures.
At present, GBP Hospital operates 19 major operation theatres and 10 minor OTs, conducting nearly 30 to 40 major surgeries every day. As the state’s premier referral hospital, it receives patients from district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, and remote areas. Many critically ill patients are rushed to GBP Hospital for advanced and complex treatments, leading to an ever-increasing surgical workload.
To address the growing patient influx, the new emergency OT has been established under the New Teaching Hospital (NTH) Unit One and Two OT Complex, with active support from the state government and the Department of Health. The facility is designed to ensure immediate surgical intervention for emergency cases, thereby reducing waiting times and minimizing the need for referrals to hospitals outside the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Bhaskar Majumder, Anesthesiologist at GBP Hospital, said that the dedicated emergency OT would play a crucial role in providing timely surgical care to critically ill patients, especially during emergencies. Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Kanak Choudhury noted that the addition of the new OT would help clear pending surgical cases more efficiently and improve overall patient outcomes.
The emergency OT has been made fully operational with support from the Director of Health Services, along with the deployment of three nursing officers and additional supporting staff to ensure smooth and continuous functioning.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Tuesday, was attended by senior doctors and officials, including Dr Kanak Choudhury, Dr Bikash Debbarma (RMO), Dr Subhash Ranjan Das (HOD), Dr Bhaskar Majumder, Dr Tushar Majumder, Dr Ashis Das, Dr Abhik Deb, and several nursing officers and hospital staff.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Family Welfare announced that another operation theatre will soon be launched at the Trauma Care Centre, further strengthening GBP Hospital’s surgical infrastructure and emergency response capabilities.
