Agartala, June 5: Atas Chakraborty, a former political activist affiliated with both the BJP and Congress, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Raipur, Madhya Pradesh. His body was recovered by local authorities from a roadside location. The cause of death is currently under investigation.

Chakraborty was employed in the Industries and Commerce Department of the Tripura government. Sources close to the deceased informed that he had recently traveled to Hyderabad for medical treatment, reportedly due to kidney-related ailments. After his visit to Hyderabad, he proceeded to Madhya Pradesh, where his lifeless body was later discovered.

The deceased was identified by local police through an ID card found on him, following which Tripura Police and his family were informed. His body has been shifted to a morgue, and a detailed investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances leading to his death.

Chakraborty began his political journey with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), contesting the Agartala Municipal Council elections in 2000 from Ward No. 7. He later joined the Congress and held key roles in the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). After the demise of his father, Chakraborty secured a government job under compassionate appointment, marking the end of his active political engagement.

Notably, Chakraborty shared a close rapport with former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister and current Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. During Varma’s tenure in Tripura, Chakraborty was attached to his office on deputation.

Though away from politics in recent years, Chakraborty remained well-connected with leaders across party lines. His untimely and mysterious death has shocked many in Tripura’s political and administrative circles. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause of death.
