With increased vigilance against smuggling activities, transport companies have resorted to desperate measures to bring illegal foreign cigarettes into Assam. Despite these efforts, the in-charge of the Assam Churaibari Waz Post ensured that the smuggling attempt did not succeed.
During a routine search, an online goods-laden container vehicle (bearing registration number AS01NC-4586) traveling from Guwahati to Agartala was stopped at the Churaibari Watchpost check post. Among the online goods, authorities discovered 48,960 pieces of cigarettes concealed in 2,388 pockets. The seized cigarettes included Marlboro Gold (from Switzerland) and Gudang Garam (from Indonesia). The driver of the vehicle, Arzul Haque (36), was apprehended. His father, Dil Mohd, resides in Nalbari district, Assam.
In-charge Pranab Mili confirmed that a case would be filed against the arrested individual, and he would be produced in the Karimganj Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court.
