Agartala, June 19, 2026: The College of Agriculture, Tripura, in collaboration with the ICAR–Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur, successfully organized a Field Day on Black Gram and Green Gram along with a Training Programme on “Restoration of Soil Health through Summer Pulses Cultivation with Balanced Fertilization” on June 19, 2026. The programme was conducted under the national campaign “Khet Bachao Abhiyan”, which focuses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices and restoring soil health through pulse-based cropping systems.

The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 55 farmers from Khowai and South Tripura districts, providing a valuable platform for interaction among scientists, extension personnel, and farmers. Discussions centered on the significance of pulse cultivation in improving soil fertility, enhancing nutritional security, and increasing farm income through sustainable farming practices.

To support scientific pulse cultivation and integrated crop management, participating farmers were provided with essential agricultural inputs, including Rhizobium culture, Trichoderma, Yellow Sticky Traps, Hermetic Storage Bags, and other farm-use materials. These inputs are expected to help farmers adopt improved production technologies and enhance crop productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability.

Dr. D. P. Patel, Nodal Officer of the IIPR Pulse Promotion Project (NEH Component), joined the programme virtually and delivered an insightful address. He highlighted the pivotal role of pulses in restoring soil health through biological nitrogen fixation and emphasized the importance of balanced fertilization for sustaining long-term agricultural productivity. He also shared practical recommendations for improving pulse-based farming systems in the region.

The programme was graced by Prof. Samir Kumar, Registrar, Tripura University, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he stressed the need for stronger collaboration between agricultural research institutions and farming communities to achieve sustainable agricultural development. Prof. Debashish Sen, Principal and Director, College of Agriculture, Tripura, presided over the programme and encouraged farmers to adopt improved pulse production technologies for higher productivity and better soil health management.

The event concluded with an interactive session during which farmers shared their experiences and discussed challenges related to pulse cultivation. The organizers reaffirmed their commitment to conducting similar outreach programmes to promote climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture across Tripura.
